Zombies in the Parking Lot

*This story I wrote for the creative writing assignments in Composition II. I liked the final outcome a lot so now I am sharing it with the Guild and others who find it. Go ahead and give any feedback on the writing and if there are people who want me to continue on this writing I'll see what I can do. Enjoy!*

Lee has been in a security guard for Wal-Mart for the past five years ever since he got back from fighting in the middle-east. He saw horrible things there, things he never wanted to repeat. He found his new job relaxing; a gun was always by his side but he never had to shoot it. Not once did he ever want to. The worst he’s ever gotten up this point was a few of skateboarding hooligans who were tagging the back of the mega-chain store.

It was 3a.m. and Lee was on graveyard patrol. He loved the graveyard patrol because most people were sleeping and hardly anyone showed up to Wal-Mart. He got a report of a disturbance going on at a customer’s car, so he got off the computers and went to check out what was going. Leaving the security office he saw there were a few people walking around doing their nighttime shopping. He went through one of the two exits and started walking to his partner, Harvey. Harvey was a college kid just trying to get some easy cash to pay off his room and board.

“There’s like two guys over trying to break into someone’s car,” Harvey said to his approaching mentor.

“Well follow me newbie. We’ll see what’s going on and get it fixed before we have to call the police,” grumbled Lee. He hated it when he actually had to get involved in anything. He wished he could just do nothing. The two approached the car and heard moaning and grunting along with thumping. Lee took out a light and shone it on the two. “Hey what are you two doing?” he asked.

The two men turned around to reveal rotting flesh for faces and eyes without a pupil. Their teeth were gnarled with black goo oozing out. One of them opened his mouth and gave a low moan.

“Holy crap, what the hell is that!” screamed Harvey. He pulled out his baton, ready to swing but too afraid to.

Lee pulled out his pistol and aimed it at the closest zombie. “Don’t move or I’ll shoot,” he said.

The zombies continued to approach and Lee shot one in the knee. The zombie continued to move despite the shattered kneecap. Harvey swung at the second zombie who fell back. The swing would’ve been hard enough to knock a man unconscious, but that zombie just got up ready for more.

“Lee, what do we do now?” asked Harvey.

“Kid, cover your eyes, this is going to get bloody,” Lee replied. He did what he thought he would never have to do again. He aimed the gun straight in between the eyes and popped off a round. The back of the zombie’s head burst and it fell back. It never got back up. The second zombie shuffled closer, but Lee had enough time to aim another shot and pop off another round. That zombie also fell over and never came back up.

“Was that necessary old man!” shouted Harvey, who was going through shock.

“You let me worry about that. Head to that car and make sure whoever was in it is safe now,” commanded Lee. “I’m going to check these things for ID.”

“Fine, just don’t let those things come near me,” grumbled Harvey. He jogged up to the car and looked inside. There was a woman in there, probably in her early twenties. He also saw blood; on the window and on her arm. He opened up the door and looked inside. “Hey, miss. You okay? You’re not injured are you?”

The wounded lady fell onto the ground and tried clutching at his pant legs. She got herself up and took a long look at Harvey.

“Hey, Lee, this lady’s injured! We’re going to need the first aid!” he started to shout but then the lady took a bite at his neck and ripped a piece of flesh out. He screamed in pain and pushed her back. He pulled out his own pistol and fired off several rounds into the lady’s reanimated corpse. He shot off every round his magazine had but she still got to her knees and took a bite at his ankle. Lee rushed over and kicked her away from Harvey. He aimed his gun and shot her in the head.

“Harvey, you okay!?” he shouted back as he kept an eye on the lady. “Whatever these things are they only die by headshots.” He looked and he saw Harvey struggling to stay alive. He went to the kid and saw his eyes begin to change. Lee found himself shocked, but it quickly passed when he knew what to do. He got up and shot a round into Harvey’s head. He closed this eyes and turned back to Wal-Mart. Only now did he realize that there was chaos going on in the store.

“Well, looks like this is only the beginning,” he said to himself as three zombies from different angles slowly close in on him.
